Sponsoring your family in Dubai, salary rules and process
The minimum-salary thresholds, documents (including attested marriage certificate), costs per person, and the timeline to bring your family over.
Once your own residence visa is stamped, you can sponsor your spouse, children and (with conditions) parents. Here's how it works for employees.
Who can sponsor
- Minimum salary: AED 4,000/month (or AED 3,000 + employer accommodation) to sponsor a wife and children. Practically, plan on comfortably more once you cost real housing.
- Both husbands and wives can sponsor family (wives sponsoring husbands may need approvals depending on profession/salary).
- Parents: possible but stricter, typically AED 20,000/month salary (or lower with two-bedroom housing proof), refundable deposit per parent, and mandatory health insurance.
Documents you'll need
- Attested marriage certificate (for spouse) and birth certificates (for children), attested in India through the same MEA → UAE-embassy chain as your degree, then MOFA in the UAE. Start this early; it's the usual bottleneck.
- Your tenancy contract (Ejari), bed spaces/shared rooms don't qualify; you need a proper tenancy in your name.
- Salary certificate or attested labour contract, passport copies and photos.
Cost per person (typical)
- Entry permit + status change + residence stamping + Emirates ID: roughly AED 1,800–2,500 per dependent through standard channels.
- Medical test (spouse and 18+): ~AED 320.
- Health insurance: mandatory in Dubai, basic plans from ~AED 700–1,500/yr per person; family plans vary widely.
- School-age kids: factor CBSE/ICSE school fees (AED 12k–35k/yr at Indian-curriculum schools, see the schools layer on our Dubai map).
Timeline
With attested certificates in hand, a dependent visa typically completes in 2–4 weeks: entry permit → (family enters or status-changes in-country) → medical → Emirates ID biometrics → residence stamping.
Common sequence for movers
- You land, complete your own visa + Emirates ID, and take a proper tenancy.
- Certificates get attested in India in parallel.
- Family follows 1–3 months later, entering on the entry permit.
Renewals follow the sponsor: dependents' visas are tied to yours, so calendar both expiry dates together.
