Your first 72 hours in Dubai, exact checklist

SIM, NOL card, medical, Emirates ID biometrics, bank-ready documents, what to do in your first three days, in order.

Land with a plan and your first week in Dubai is smooth. Here's the sequence that works.

Day 0, at the airport

  • SIM card: grab a tourist/new-arrival SIM at the du or e& (Etisalat) counter in arrivals (~AED 100 with data). You need a local number for everything, banks, Careem, delivery.
  • Cash: withdraw AED 500–1,000 from an airport ATM. Many small shops and bed-space landlords prefer cash.
  • Taxi vs Metro: airport taxis are metered and safe (~AED 50–70 to Bur Dubai). The Red Line metro also runs from Terminals 1 and 3, cheapest option if you land before midnight with light luggage.

Day 1, transport + bearings

  • NOL card (metro/bus/tram): buy a Silver NOL at any metro station (AED 25, includes AED 19 credit). It also pays for buses and public ferries.
  • Walk your neighbourhood: find the nearest metro station, supermarket, and pharmacy.
  • Activate WhatsApp on your UAE number, landlords and HR coordinate on WhatsApp here.

Day 2, visa medicals (if employment visa is in process)

Your employer/PRO will book the medical fitness test (blood test + chest X-ray, ~AED 320 standard). Carry your passport and visa application copy. Results in 1–3 days; "VIP" same-day options exist.

Day 3, Emirates ID biometrics

After medicals, you'll do Emirates ID biometrics (fingerprints + photo) at an ICP/AMER centre. The physical card arrives in roughly 5–10 days, your employer's PRO usually receives it.

While you wait

  • Bank account: shortlist banks (see our bank-account guide); most need your Emirates ID, so prep documents now, passport, visa page, salary certificate from HR.
  • Attestation/MOFA: if your degree needs the final MOFA stamp, do it this week.
  • Budget reality-check: track your first-week spend against your saved Dubaikar budget, the first month is always the most expensive.

Rule of thumb: nothing official moves without your Emirates ID. Everything in your first two weeks is about getting it issued fast.
